Depiction of Gérard de Villefort

Gérard de Villefort

Gérard de Villefort is a primary antagonist in Alexandre Dumas’s 1846 novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Initially an ambitious deputy crown prosecutor in Marseilles, he sentences the protagonist, Edmond Dantès, to life imprisonment at the Château d’If to protect his own political career and hide the Bonapartist affiliations of his father, Noirtier de Villefort.

As the story progresses, Villefort ascends to the position of crown prosecutor in Paris, where he maintains a facade as a pillar of justice and the law. However, his underlying corruption makes him a central target of Dantès’s revenge. This retribution ultimately leads to the public exposure of his infidelity, the destruction of his family, and his final descent into madness.
